Research Interest
- Identifying agents that modulate the function of cancer stem cells and elucidating their mechanism of actions
Our research is focused on elucidating the molecular mechanisms of agents that can induce the differentiation of cancer stem cells, which has been reported to take part in the development of recurring cancers. The monolayer layer culture of cancer stem cells, which has been established recently, is being used to identify agents inducing differentiation of cancer stem cells and the mechanisms of the actions of these agents are also being investigated.
In particular, we are highly interested in elucidating the role of some of the dopamine receptor antagonists in inducing the differentiation of cancer stem cells. In addition, we are trying to understand the structure-activity relationship between dopamine receptor antagonists and their differentiation inducing ability. - Drug repurposing study using stereoisomer drugs
Drug repurposing (also referred to as repositioning), the process of finding new uses of existing drugs, has been gaining a lot of attention in recent years. Many drugs are being used as racemates, which are mixtures of stereoisomers, in clinic. Each of stereoisomers may have similar activity on the target disease and only one type of stereoisomers may have activity. It has been reported that stereoisomers in a racemic mixture have totally different activities. We are trying to find new functions or activities of stereoisomers using a variety of cellular assay systems such as cancer cell liness, adipocyte cell lines, and immune cell lines.
