스마트도시는 도시 계획·설계에 정보통신기술 및 첨단기술 요소 등을 융·복합하여 건설하는 도시기반 시설을 바탕으로 다양한 첨단 도시서비스를 제공하고 스스로 문제해결 능력을 갖춘 지속가능한 도시입니다. 스마트도시는 4차 산업혁명 시대의 혁신기술을 활용하여 도시의 경쟁력과 시민들의 삶의 질을 향상시키고, 도시의 지속 가능성을 제고함으로써 새로운 산업을 창출할 수 있는 국가 미래산업의 플랫폼이라 하겠습니다.
스마트도시는 현 정부의 혁신·전력투자 계획에 따른 4대 정책방향·8대 핵심선도사업 중 하나로 빅데이터, 인공지능(AI), 정보통신기술(ICT), 사물인터넷(IoT) 기술의 융·복합 외 서비스, 도시계획, 기반시설, 안전, 에너지, 환경, 거버넌스 등 다양한 이슈 해결을 위한 능동적 인재가 절실히 필요한 분야입니다. 기존의 한정적·피상적 교육프로그램에서 탈피하여 국내외 스마트도시 정책과 수요를 고려한 스마트도시 교육 프로그램의 제공으로 미래 산업의 수요를 충족시킬 인재 양성이 필요합니다.
고려대학교 세종캠퍼스의 스마트도시학부는 이러한 4차 산업혁명의 핵심 플랫폼인 스마트도시 산업을 주도할 핵심 고급인력 양성을 목표로 2021년 3월 국내 최초로 학부과정으로 개설됩니다. 스마트도시학부 학생들은 ICT 기술 발전에 따른 첨단 스마트 시설과 도시들을 계획, 설계, 시공, 운영하고 정책 수립에 기여할 융·복합형 전문인력으로서 스마트도시 글로벌 산업구조 재편과 스마트도시 산업의 해외 진출을 선도하는 핵심 역할을 수행할 것입니다.

Smart city, which is established through convergence between ICT and other cutting-edge technologies, is a sustainable city that has an autonomous problem solving ability and provides a range of advanced services. This is a national future industry platform to improve the city’s competitiveness and citizens’ quality of life as well as creating a new industry by using technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
In this field, active talents to address urban planning, safety, energy and environmental issues through application of big data, AI, ICT and IoT technologies are needed. To this end, new and innovative education reflecting smart city policies and demands is required.
Having opened the School of Smart Cities as the first in Korea in March 2021, Korea University Sejong Campus fosters elite talents to lead the future smart city industry. Students in the School of Smart Cities will grow to professionals who contribute to policy establishment by planning, designing and operating smart facilities and cities, and lead the global smart city industry restructuring and overseas market entry.

Introduction
Smart city is a sustainable city equipped with an autonomous problem-solving ability that provides advanced urban services based on the urban infrastructure built through application of ICT and cutting-edge technologies to the city planning and design. Smart city is a national future industry platform on which new industries are created as it improves sustainability of the city as well as the city’s competitiveness and citizens’ quality of life using innovative technologies in the Fourth Industrial Revolution era.
As one of the eight core projects under the four policy directions according to the current government’s innovation and power investment plan, smart city is an area that is in keen need of active talents to address various issues ranging from service, urban planning and infrastructure to safety, energy, environment and governance in addition to the convergence of big data, artificial intelligence (AI), information and communications technology (ICT) and Internet of things (IoT). Escaping from the limited and superficial educational programs in the past, a smart city education program considering domestic and international smart city policies and demands is required to develop human resources who are capable of meeting the future industry demand.
The School of Smart Cities was opened in March 2021 as the first undergraduate course in Korea with a goal to foster elite talents to lead smart city industry, a core platform of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The students of the School of Smart Cities will develop into professional convergence-type talents who will contribute to smart city policy development at the same time as planing, designing, installing and operating advanced smart cities and facilities according to the ICT development, and also play the role to lead global restructuring and overseas entry by Korea’s smart city industry.
