Definition
Students unable to attend a regular semester due to personal circumstances may, with the permission of the university president, halt their studies for a designated period
Application Period
- Spring Semester: Feb. 1–25
- Fall Semester: Aug. 1–25
- Until 2016, leave of absence could be taken in the existing procedure without the “mid-semester leave of absence” applied limitedly when the signature of the respective department head is affixed (until Mar. 21 and Sep. 20)

Application Method
- Online Application by Undergraduate Students: Students submit their application for a leave of absence in units of either one semester or one academic year in Portal – Registration/Graduation – University Registration – Application for Leave of Absence/ReturnA leave of absence may be either for one semester or one year. Students needing to extend their period of leave of absence must apply for another leave of absence in the semester they are expected to return
- For a leave of absence after the application period (mid-semester leave of absence), submit the application to the Academic Affairs Dept. of the respective school
- For conversion to a general leave of absence after discharge from military service, scan and attach or fax a copy of the certificate of discharge from military service, certificate of military registration or abstract of the resident registration (details of military registration marked)
For leave of absence/return for graduate school students, fill out the application and send it to Academic Affairs Dept. of the respective school
Terms of Leave of Absence
- The total period of absence is three years (six semesters)
- Leave of Absence for Medical Treatment: Period can be extended for up to one year
(Medical certificate stipulating a duration of at least four weeks issued by the director of an auxiliary hospital or other general hospital and confirmatory statement from the academic advisor or head of the department/division required) - First year students, transfer students and re-admitted students cannot take a leave of absence in the first semester unless for military service or medical treatment
(Leave of Absence for Medical Treatment: Medical certificate for hospitalization with a duration of at least four weeks (issued by the director of an auxiliary hospital or other general hospital) and certificate of hospitalization with a duration of at least four weeks to be submitted - Leave of Absence for Training after Passing a National Examination: The period of leave of absence can be extended until the end of the training period (required documents to be submitted)
- The period of a special leave of absence (such as pregnancy, start-up, military service, etc.) is not subject to the term stipulated in the total period of leave of absence and is processed separately (required documents to be submitted)

Facility Use
- Students on a leave of absence remain eligible to use libraries and reading rooms and sports facilities
- Students on a leave of absence are still eligible to take summer and winter courses
Note
- First year students, transfer students and re-admitted students cannot take a leave of absence for the first semester after admission unless the absence is due to military service or medical treatment
- Upon submission of an application collect and retain the filing receipt (limited to those who submitted the documents in person)
- Application for leave of absence/return for graduate school students cannot be submitted online
- Students intending to take a leave of absence in March (September) must have the amount of their enrollment fee deducted by one sixth through application of the “mid-semester leave of absence” before they start the leave of absence
